Top 3 Considerations When Deciding to Take the GMAT or GRE

This post is courtesy of our friends at Magoosh. UC Davis’ Graduate School of Management recently announced that it will accept either the GRE or GMAT. This decisions follows that of top business schools including Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, MIT, NYU and Dartmouth. As a result, budding MBAs have another choice when going through the admissions process—which fricking test does one take? A few thoughts to consider: 1. Do all of your target schools accept the GRE? Although many business schools accept both tests, some only accept the GMAT (for example, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business). If you are applying to some schools that only accept the GMAT, it is advisable to only take that exam. Unless you like taking tests. Nerd. 2. Do you perform better on the GRE? Assuming you are applying to schools that all accept the GRE, take a free practice test for the GRE and GMAT each exam. If you perform better on one and you think your score has a better opportunity to improve, it is the better test to take. 3. Are you applying for a dual degree program? If you are tacking on a MPH or other graduate degree to your MBA, check to see whether or not the other program will accept the GMAT. If not, the GRE may be the way to go.
